Kenya’s CHAN Journey Ends in Agony as Madagascar Advance

Kenya’s historic debut run at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) came to a heartbreaking conclusion on Friday night at Kasarani Stadium. Despite a spirited display, the Harambee Stars were edged out by Madagascar in a nail-biting penalty shootout that ended 4-3 in favor of the islanders.

The result denied Kenya a place in the semi-finals — something the nation has not achieved in continental football for nearly four decades.

A Night of Highs and Heartbreak

The home crowd erupted in the 48th minute when defender Alphonce Omija headed home Boniface Muchiri’s pinpoint cross, giving Kenya a 1-0 lead. The stadium, buzzing with anticipation, sensed history in the making.

Minutes later, Ryan Ogam thought he had doubled the advantage, only for VAR to rule out his goal due to a foul in the build-up. That decision swung momentum.

Madagascar clawed their way back in the 66th minute. A handball by Lewis Bandi gifted them a penalty, and Fenohasina Razafimaro converted calmly past goalkeeper Byrne Omondi to level the tie at 1-1.

Omija, Kenya’s early hero, would later endure the cruel twist of fate — missing from the spot during the decisive shootout.

The Shootout

With the match still tied after extra time, penalties became the ultimate decider.

  • Kenya scorers: Siraj Mohammed, Daniel Sakari, Sylvester Owino

  • Kenya misses: Mike Kibwage (saved), Alphonce Omija (wide)

  • Madagascar scorers: Toky Rakotondraibe (winner), alongside teammates holding their nerve

Madagascar’s goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa turned into the star of the night, pulling off key saves that ensured his side’s progression.

Kenya’s Campaign in Perspective

Although the journey ended in disappointment, the Harambee Stars can take pride in a remarkable first CHAN appearance. They topped a tough group containing Morocco and DR Congo, conceding only twice in five matches — a sign of defensive discipline under coach Benni McCarthy.

But their struggles in front of goal eventually caught up with them, proving costly in the quarter-finals. Still, the team leaves with renewed belief and a foundation to build on ahead of future tournaments.

Madagascar March On

For Madagascar, the fairy tale continues. Having finished third at CHAN 2022, the Barea once again showed their resilience and composure on the continental stage. Coach Romuald Felix Rakotondrabe’s men not only topped their group but also showcased mental toughness in the shootout.

Ramandimbisoa’s penalty heroics and Toky Rakotondraibe’s winning kick sparked wild celebrations, keeping alive their dream of another podium finish.
